Girls
in the scene!
By Zex of SecT
I read the article by Ben of
Absolute!, about what his opinion was
of females in the Amiga scene, and my
first reaction was that of disgust!
How could somebody in their right mind
say such utter crap and think that
they could get away with it.
The article he wrote was written
out of hate, and not of logic. After
thinking about his article for a
while, I had a theory that he was just
saying this just to get some female
scene members to write their opinions
for a change. But after some more
consideration, I decided that he must
have ment what he said. Because what
person would speak such trash and also
tarnish their own name like that, just
to get a few articles written by some
scene girls.
But the article I'm writing here,
is not suppose to be an attack on Ben,
but of my own opinion of girls in the
scene.
I myself have never known a female
scene member, and I know of no groups
here in Australia that have one. To
me this is sad, because all this
shows is that girls are not at all
interested in computers, and that the
only time that they might use one is
when they are working.
The reason for this I think is
because of the way they teach
computing at schools. A few years ago
when I was still at school, my
computer class had a nice even
mixture of both boys and girls. But
the girls soon lost interest, because
of the way the teacher taught us to
feel like it was mainly a boys
subject, and that girls were not
really suited to it.
Even television and movies mainly
show only boys using computers, with
only on small and rare occasions do
they show a girl using one to do home
work. The only real note worthy movie
I can even think of that actually had
a girl using a computer and enjoying
it, was Jurassic Park! (JP) The girls
name was Lex, (Ariana Richards) and
she confessed to being a computer
hacker and loving it.
Then yesterday while I was
flipping through a movie magazine,
I spotted an article about JP, and it
said that Lex was considered a tomboy
because she liked computers.
Now this type of stigma attached
to girls who use computers, in my
opinion is not good. Why can't a girl
use a computer for her own personal
entertainment without being classed as
a boy with a girls body?
Our own demo scene here is guilty
of such careless stereotyping, and
this must be stopped. I have seen a
few demos from girl only crews, and
while they may not be as good as
many of the other demos that are
around, I think that they were not to
bad for beginners in the scene.
Most scene members get help and
advice from other scene friends, but
I wonder how many guys out there would
actually try to give a girl REAL
advice, so that her skills could
improve?
Another reason why girls probably
do not enter the scene, is because
they are never introduced to it. If
you know of a girl who is good at art,
or is good at music or even enjoys
writing letters, then show them what
they could become involved in. The
best place to start is by letting them
read a diskzine (like SH) and see
what they think of it. It couldn't
hurt!!
And another reason why I think many
girls do not enter the scene is
because of all of this male macho crap
that many guys like to do. Why would a
girl enter the scene, when all she
reads and hears is what things the
male scene members like to do to girls
in bed, and how dumb girls are?
Do not get me wrong, we are guys,
and ego boosting is in all of us, but
there is a limit. I should also say
that I do not have anything against
graphicians drawing girls anyway they
wish. (naked or clothed) As long as
it's for art, and not to degrade
girls, I won't give a damn!
A sad thing I have noticed is that
the girls who are already in the
scene, do not voice their opinions.
When ever somebody says something bad
about girls being dumb and not worthy
to enter the scene, I never see an
article back from a girl in defense.
In fact I have yet to see an article
even written by a girl. If they do not
make themselves known, then other
girls who may be interested in
entering this hobby, will soon forget
about it because, as to them they will
see the scene as a domain for boys
ONLY!
Nearly every single article I have
read on this topic is base d on one
simple thought, and that is girls are
no good at mathematics. Maybe in
Europe this true, (as I have never
been there) but here in Australia
girls can be as smart, and even
smarter than boys! This is a lame
statement that lacks no proof, and I
am sure that it is a lie!
Girls are just as talented as
boys, and there is no reason why they
can not be as skilled in the scene
like the rest of us. Girls should be
allowed to freely do any scene job
they want without having to prove
themselves all the time, from a coder
right through to a swapper!
Actually I think that the scene
would be much better off if there were
more girls involved in it. Demos have
reached the stage where the best coded
demo may not win at a party anymore,
and I am happy with this. A demo is
no longer who can do the most glenz
vectors in one frame or what ever, but
who has the most entertaining demo.
And the most entertaining demo is now
who has the best design. For example
State Of The Art by Spaceballs has
been attacked for it's lousy code, but
it won at the Party II, because of
it's originality and design.
And to me girls have a much better
sense of design than most guys, and
so we should be allowing them to
design our demos, and even code them
or what ever else they wish to do.
A very well designed demo will nearly
always be remembered than one that has
some new vector routines in it.
We must cease our silly and petty
thoughts that girls belong only as
girlfriends and bed companions, and
not as our equals! We must face our
future head on, and be proud to have
girls in the scene with us!
BECAUSE GIRLS ARE OUR EQUALS!
